THE LEGEND OF THE KUMBH MELA
The Churning of the Ocean (Samudra Manthan) :
The story begins with the devatas (Gods) and asuras (Demons) seeking the amrita kalasha (pot of nectar of immortality) from the primordial ocean to attain immortality. They churned the ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of serpents, as the churning rope.
The Battle for Amrita Kalasha :
When the amrita kalasha emerged from the ocean, a fierce battle ensued between the devatas and asuras for its possession. To prevent the asuras from seizing it, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a captivating female form, and distributed the amrita among the devatas.
The Chase and Hiding of Amrita Kalasha:
The asuras realized they had been tricked and chased after the devatas who had the amrita kalasha. The devatas, fearing the asuras, sought Lord Brahma’s advice, who instructed them to hide the amrita kalasha at four places: Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Ujjain, and Nashik.
Duration and Cycle of Kumbh Mela :
The chase lasted for 12 divine days, equivalent to 12 human years. The Kumbh Mela is celebrated every 12 years in each of the four locations where drops of the nectar are believed to have fallen, rotating in this cycle.
